Photography workshops: how to prepare for studio practice?

Do you know the camera basics but spend too long finding the right light, or cannot decide what to improve in a portrait? A photography workshop gives you time for active shooting, testing solutions and feedback. In an individual session, you work on specific tasks.

Choose one task to practise

Before meeting, name the problem: controlling facial shadows, separating a model from the background, directing posing or editing portraits consistently. Show a few of your photographs and explain what is not working. This helps focus practice on situations from your own shoots.

Equipment and preparation

  • A digital camera with manual mode and basic knowledge of its operation.
  • A lens — ideally 50 mm; a wider lens is also suitable.
  • An empty memory card, a charged battery and a spare if available.
  • For Full and editing work: a laptop with Photoshop.
  • A few photographs to discuss and written questions.

Confirm the requirements of your chosen programme before the date. If manual mode is still unclear, start with photography training: practice is easier to focus on once the fundamentals are understood.

How to approach the exercises

When comparing setups, change one element at a time, such as the position of a light. Take a photograph before and after the change, then compare shadows, background and facial shape. Record what produced the intended effect. This is a suggested way to practise, rather than a fixed timetable for every programme.

Ask for specific feedback: “What should I change to soften this shadow?” or “Which frame better expresses the intended mood?”. These questions help turn an observation into your next attempt.

Which format should you choose in Poznań?

Basic includes five hours of studio work; Full combines practice and editing in a seven-hour session. There are also 1+1 meetings, image analysis and consultations. See the individual photography workshop offer for programmes, current prices and conditions. Studio meetings take place at Studio Dym, ul. Michała Kajki 14, Poznań; dates are agreed individually.

After the workshop

Select a few frames that demonstrate the main change and record how you achieved it. Repeat one exercise in your next shoot. If you need to organise the theory, read where to start learning photography. Write about the task you want to practise to choose a workshop.
